Designing the hallway: 3 Ideas to copy

An entrance area with a feel-good factor! Who wouldn't want a chic hallway that looks inviting at first glance? Interior professionals Eva Brenner and Aneta Brüstle reveal how they use three simple hallway ideas to turn the entrance into a successful calling card for the rest of the home.

Entrance area design - simple & stylish

No flair, hardly any storage space and somehow meaningless: The hallway that Eva and Aneta have to design for their joint project offers plenty of space for creative ideas. The aim is to give the spacious entrance area a face and literally bring the place to life with unusual hallway furniture and accessories and subtle splashes of color.

Since a coat rack should not be missing in any entrance area and Bench seat is very comfortable when putting on shoes, the two decide on this chic hallway furniture as a hallway design. The icing on the cake should be a self-made Clock venting. Thought, planned, built.

Hallway idea 1: Do-it-yourself designer bench

Why spend a lot of money on designer pieces when you can build beautiful hallway furniture yourself at a reasonable price? A bench is the centerpiece of every entrance area. Whether you want to put your shoes on comfortably or use it to store your handbag, rucksack etc. - with a little skill, you can build your own practical hallway furniture in just a few simple steps.

For this you need:

  • WAGNER paint spraying system, e.g. W 600 FLEXiO
  • Mitre saw
  • Cordless screwdriver
  • Screw clamps
  • Screws
  • Metal feet (from the Internet)
  • Paint/color of your choice for wood and metal
  • Masking material
  • Respiratory mask

A step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Cutting the wooden slats for the seat

First of all, you need to think carefully about how big the bench should be in the end and how much space is available in the hallway. Once the decision has been made, the wooden slats for the seat are carefully sawn to size. A miter saw is recommended for the angled corners. The slats for the frame and the two cross slats can also be placed under the saw blade.

Step 2: Building the frame

The wooden slats are now given a frame. A frame for the seat is built from the pre-cut slats using screw clamps.

Extratipp: To achieve even spacing between the individual wooden slats of the seat, a wooden slat can be used as a spacer.

Step 3: Fixing the frame

One wooden slat after the other can now be screwed to the frame at both ends and thus fixed in place.

Step 4: Attach the cross slats to the underside

Once everything is screwed in place, a crossbar is attached to the underside on the right and left to stabilize it. The feet of the bench are attached to these in the next step.

Step 5: Now color comes into play

Once the seat is fully assembled, it can be primed and then painted. Here too, make sure that the surrounding area is protected with cardboard. And the purchased metal feet are also looking forward to some color. Make absolutely sure that metal lacquer is used for this.

The designer bench à la Eva and Aneta is finished

Designing a hallway doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. All it takes is a little creativity and a desire to do it yourself to literally spruce up the entrance area. Whether narrow or wide, long or short: With these three original pieces of hallway furniture, every hallway becomes an eye-catcher and warmly welcomes guests or residents.

Hallway idea 2: Colorful wardrobe as an eye-catcher

Items of clothing find a trendy home here: The selfbuilt coat rack enhances the entrance area and puts an end to jacket chaos once and for all. The colorful wooden strips in particular give the hallway a very individual look.

For this you need:

  • Plastic tub
  • Plastic pipes (best cut to approx. 15 - 20 cm length)
  • Craft concrete
  • Water
  • WD 40 Multifunctional oil
  • Gloves
  • Rods of the desired length and diameter (have them cut to size at a DIY store)
  • WAGNER paint spraying system (e.g. W 600 Flexio)
  • Color(s) of your choice
  • Line for hanging up the rods
  • Small hooks for hanging up the rods
  • Saw for grooves in the bars (for hanging up the jackets)
  • Masking material
  • Respiratory mask

A step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Pouring concrete base

Spray the plastic tray in the desired size and the cut tubes generously with WD 40 multifunctional oil. The concrete is then mixed and filled into the tub. Immediately afterwards, the pipes are inserted into the still liquid concrete. They later form the holes into which the coat rails are inserted.

Step 2: Remove pipes in good time and loosen concrete base

Once the concrete has set a little, the pipes can be removed again, as they have now served their purpose. This must be done before the concrete has completely hardened, otherwise the pipes can no longer be loosened properly and, in the worst case, the concrete may break.

Once the concrete has hardened well, the coat stand can be removed from the tub. The first part of the hallway furniture is now ready for use.

Step 3: Prepare bars

Now it's time to use the wooden rods that will later hold jackets, coats and the like. First, they are shortened to the right length as required. A small notch is sawn into the top as a coat hook so that the garment holds securely. Then the rods are first primed so that the paint holds better.

Step 4: Spray paint coat rails

Now you can start spraying. In order to color the sticks evenly from all sides, it is advisable to hang them outside on a clothesline or string and to hold a large cardboard box behind them while spraying to protect the surroundings.

Extra tip: To save paint, it is worth using a gravity attachment for the WAGNER spray unit. It was developed for DIY projects where only small paint volumes are used;

Hallway idea 3: Wall clock with a wow effect

White walls in the hallway are always a good choice. They look clean, elegant and make the room appear larger. But a splash of color as a hallway decoration gives particularly narrow hallways that certain something. For example, this self-made wall clock.

For this you need:

  • Drill
  • WAGNER paint spraying system (e.g. W 600 FLEXiO)
  • Color(s) of your choice
  • Ruler
  • Compasses
  • 12 fine metal rods (individual length)
  • 12 Wooden balls (size as desired)
  • Movement with hands
  • Masking material
  • Respiratory mask

A step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Spray paint balls

After selecting the color(s), first spray the 12 wooden balls and the middle part of the clock - first drill a hole in each ball the size of the metal rods and then stick them on skewers.

Step 2: Attach balls

Once the paint has dried, the balls are placed on the metal rods.

Quick and practical spraying

The quickest way to do this is, for example, with theFor example, with the - WAGNER spray unit W 600. The Gravity attachments are particularly suitable for smaller paint volumes. If you don't have a hobby workshop and don't want any paint stains on your patio floor, it's best to make a spray booth out of old cardboard boxes;

Step 3: Calculate distances

Wagner 0707 Zeiger klein

The clock can now be assembled. First, calculate the angles and distances of the 12 bars using a ruler and compass - it is important to ensure uniformity here.

Step 4: Attaching the movement and rods

Wagner 0761 Uhr zusammenbauen02 klein

The middle section of the clock is therefore provided with 12 holes, one for each bar. Once all the holes have been drilled, the rods can be inserted into the balls and fixed in place (with glue if necessary). Once all the rods are in place, the movement can also find its place.
