Few boxes, many possibilities: How to build your individual wine crate rack

Beautiful wine crates are not only the home for fine wines, but are also ideal as individual wall shelves with rustic charm.

Together with Sari and Christian from the YouTube channel Saris Garage, we'll show you how to build your own wine crate rack in just a few simple steps. This simple DIY solution has a big impact. With a few wooden crates, some tools and a pinch of creativity, you can create a stylish shelf for indoor and outdoor use.

What you need: List of tools, materials and aids

  • Wine or fruit crates (in different sizes)
  • Plank boards
  • Shelf rollers
  • Weather resistant coating
  • Protective film
  • Enough screws
  • Plugs
  • Work gloves
  • Dust mask

A step-by-step guide: Build your own shelves from wine or fruit crates

Step 1: Weatherproofing wood with glaze

All boxes that will later be assembled into your individual shelf should first be sprayed with a weather protection glaze. This is because the glaze protects the wood from wind and weather when you use the shelf outdoors. Spraying is quick and efficient with a spray system such as the cordless universal sprayer W 600 FLEXiO 18V from WAGNER. You can either use a transparent glaze or choose a different color that goes well with your interior or decor.

Step 2: Arrange boxes as desired

This step is particularly fun because now the creative part begins: Depending on the intended use of the shelf - whether as a wall-mounted or floor-standing shelf - and of course the size of the piece of furniture, the boxes are now arranged in a sensible and individual way. Whether as a four-shelf unit, narrow and high or wide and arranged as a sideboard - a wine crate shelf is wonderfully flexible.

Step 3: Screw the shelf together

Once you have decided on a size and the number or arrangement of the boxes, they are screwed together professionally. If you want a little more stability or a flat surface, you can attach planks to the bottom or top of the wine crate furniture. These give the piece of furniture a completely new look. If you want to place your self-built shelf made of wooden crates on a wall, you can also screw it down for a secure hold. If you want to use your craft project as a wall shelf, screw the furniture directly to the wall using sturdy screws.

Step 4: Attach rollers

You don't want to attach the wine crate rack to the wall, but use it as a standing shelf or room divider and be able to move it flexibly from A to B? Then attach castors to the bottom board of your shelf. And every day you can decide anew where to place your self-made piece of furniture.

Pieces of furniture that you have had enough of do not always have to be replaced and bought again straight away. A little paint is often enough to make them shine again. We'll show you how quickly this can be done using a shelf.
