Build your own playhouse - instructions and tips

Have your children been wishing for their own playhouse in the garden for a while now? Then create a retreat for them where they can plan their next adventure with friends or run wild on a warm summer's day. One thing is for sure, the wooden playhouse will provide your children with many hours of creative fun!

You can build, customise and furnish the wooden playhouse yourself. Depending on the conditions in your garden, your perfect playhouse may look different: If your ground is rather uneven, on a slope or tends to be damp, a house on stilts is a good option. If  you have a sturdy tree in your garden, what could be nicer than a tree house? A combination of playhouse and garden shed is also a good option. This way,  adults can also use the little house. With these simple steps, you can create a safe play environment for your children and bring smiles to their faces in your own garden.

Step 1: Level the ground

playhouse doing2

Find your own space in the garden for the playhouse and prepare the ground carefully. Remove any unevenness, level the ground and mark out the floor. Make sure that the area is easily accessible and offers enough space for the playhouse.

Step 2: Foundation

playhouse doing4

Dig holes for the post supports (approx. 50 cm). Here the total area for the playhouse is 2m x 2m. Mix the ready-mixed concrete with water and then add it to the holes. Then position the joist hangers and align them using a spirit level. The curing of the concrete depends on the weather conditions and the time of year.

Step 3: Cutting and fitting the beams

playhouse doing5

Cut the beams to your desired size and attach them. If there is a slope in your garden, the beams must be of different heights to ensure a stable and even construction. Make sure to measure the height differences accurately and cut the beams accordingly. Fasten the posts on both sides with screws. It is helpful to pre-drill the holes in advance.

Step 4: Build base

playhouse doing6

A simple corner overlap was chosen here. Cut the beams so that they interlock by cutting the thickness of the workpieces in half alternately so that the ends to be joined fit together. Then screw the beams together and also fasten the center beam with screws. Now measure out the boards for the floor and saw them to size. Attach the boards using screw clamps and plenty of screws. Six screws were used per board.

Step 5: Constructing movable walls

playhouse doing17

Make the frame for all four walls and the roof. With the side walls, it is important that you take the angle of inclination into account so that the rainwater can run off easily. You can saw the square timbers to size with a cross-cut and mitre saw and connect them with screws.
In this step, you are completely free to decide whether and how many windows you want to include or how big the door of the playhouse should be. You can then put the side walls in place and roughly screw them together so that you can later board up the playhouse precisely.

Step 6: Boarding of the playhouse

Pine wood was used here. Attach the boards to the playhouse vertically or horizontally, depending on your taste.
Work your way from the bottom to the top of the formwork. Once you have reached the windows, you can draw the outlines with a simple pencil and saw them with a jigsaw to cut out this area. Board the roof in the same style and position it so that you can mark the roof struts and then saw them out.

Important note

To save time, all walls and individual parts were sprayed and therefore the walls are only screwed together in such a way that they stand securely and can then be easily separated again.
The roof was built from the same square timbers. The roof can be boarded or fitted with a corrugated roof.

Step 7: Building railings

playhouse doing27

Cut the appropriate number of pieces of wood and mount them with screws at intervals of approx. 10 cm. Make sure that the timbers are evenly aligned and firmly seated to ensure a stable structure. You can then take care of the window sills. Round off the edges, to avoid injuries when playing.

Step 8: Building stairs

playhouse doing33

Determine the angle of inclination and attach two boards with screws to serve as steps. Attach additional slats underneath the steps to stabilize the whole thing. You can cut the strips for the door and window frames to size again using a mitre saw and then mount them with screws.

Step 9: Building doors and shutters

playhouse doing31

First build the door as a whole and cut it in half later using a jigsaw.
First place all the boards together and cut the struts to size using the mitre cut and assemble them with screws. Finally, attach the Z-connection, which runs across all the boards and is connected to each individual board. Repeat the same for the shutters. Note, however, that unlike the door, the Z-profile should face inwards, otherwise you could have difficulties opening it.

Step 10: Sanding components

playhouse doing37

After you have customized and put together the playhouse with all the components, you can sand it down thoroughly to achieve a smooth surface that is free of splinters and unevenness.

Step 11: Spray components with weather protection glaze

playhouse doing39

Now you can take the playhouse apart again. Spray the Apply a weather protection glaze to the partition walls, roof and railings to protect the surfaces.
Dilute the glaze with water, stir well in the container and spray! The time saved is unbeatable and the even result is an absolute dream.

Step 12: Screwing elements together

playhouse doing44

After you have sprayed all the surfaces on both sides, you can join the elements together with plenty of screws. Align the roof as soon as you have fitted all the side walls.
Now you can also fit the window sills, shutters and the door. Optionally, you can attach door handles to the door, fit the banister and install the stairs.

Step 13: Attaching roofing felt to the roof

playhouse doing48

Cut the roofing felt to the appropriate dimensions and fasten them on top of each other with nails to ensure a solid and weatherproof seal.

Step 14: Decorate playhouse

playhouse doing46

You can create a house number sign from a slice of a tree trunk. Varnish the surface and engrave the house number. A ring pull from a can, is a suitable hanger. You can attach them to the back with a simple screw. You could also use a bell.

Furnishing ideas for your children's playhouse

Install a wardrobe in the playhouse. You can attach small hooks to the inside wall for this purpose.
To create a cozy seating area, you can use pallet cushions or similar seating furniture and wine crates would be suitable as shelves. Various toys can then be stored there and are neatly organized.

Which wood is suitable for the playhouse?

Weather-resistant wood, such as larch, Douglas fir or cedar, is recommended for a garden playhouse. Although this is a more expensive option, the material is extremely resistant to weathering, insects and rot. A cheaper alternative is pressure-impregnated wood, such as pine or spruce. However, this requires a protective layer to withstand time. Use stainless steel screws that are suitable for outdoor areas to prevent rust.
